Karl Benz in 1886, on his first automobile, created a water-cooled engine system, by jacking cylinders, and forcing water through a parallel piping structure, known as radiators. The motorcar Benz and his successors were dependent to the fact that hot water is less dense than cool water, and always tends to go up in a closed system, this makes a natural circulation system known as Thermosiphon cooling.
The original cellular type of radiator was introduced by Gottlieb Daimler (non-related to Benz), That system consisted in four or five hundred ¼ inch - 12 cm tubeslength joint horizontally, such tubes were separated by cables fixed so as to run among the tubes in both directions, and water was forced to run through tubes, letting air circulate among the tubes. Tube blocks were joint and welded, front and back, letting a 1/32 inch space in each side of all tubes and were assembled with a top and bottom tanks, so as to create a radiator.
Today, due to technological advances, radiator has been improved and it is now compact design, among other reasons, since the amount of tubes used is less to those used in the 19th century, hence its manufacture is simpler and the radiator is lightweight, also other useful parts are used, as flips allowing a better coolingsystem, for such reason, the current radiator may be adapted perfectly to new era automobiles.
